Course Description

Doctoral level psychologists constantly assess the credibility of the statements provided to them in therapeutic sessions; and, there is a rich research literature on cues to deception, honesty, credibility and trustworthiness.

Despite this rich literature, however, to our knowledge, there is currently no APA approved continuing education course covering knowledge or skills regarding evaluating truthfulness, detecting deception, or assessing credibility, honesty, or trustworthiness.

Post-doctoral psychologists need to be able to assess credibility of their clients when in session and learning these practical skills will help psychologists identify areas that need to be probed more and where there are concealed thoughts, feelings, or opinions.

This may be particularly insightful when interacting with a patient to predict where there may be more to the story than what’s being told.

Learning Objectives

(1) Describe what the Pinnochio effect is with regards to credibility assessment using behavioral indicators.

(2) Recite the differences between validated, non-validated and unvalidated indicators of deception and provide examples of each.

(3) Define what a “behavioral indicator” is with regards to deception detection.

(4) Define the characteristics of a “microexpression” and what they may indicate with regards too deception detection.
