This APA approved continuing education course is multi-modal consisting of instructional videos, interactive quizzes and activities, supplemental readings, and self-assessments.

Course Description

Although cultural competence is a mainstay standard of all doctoral programs in clinical psychology, most content in those programs focus on broad issues concerning cultural diversity and do not cover the topic of culture in and of itself in depth, nor do they provide clinicians with intercultural skills necessary for effective therapeutic work in today’s diverse world.

Concomitantly, there is a large research literature that has isolated the important psychological ingredients for intercultural communication and cross-cultural adaptation.

Reviews of that literature inform us that the key psychological ingredient to intercultural communication is emotional intelligence, and more specifically emotion regulation vis-à-vis intercultural interactions and conflict.

Based on this large research literature, our APA approved continuing education course will help psychologists prepare when interacting with others from a different culture.

Learning Objectives

(1) Demonstrate an understanding of the four main factors that are central to an understanding of the origins of human cultures.

(2) List key differences between objective and subjective elements of culture and examples of each.

(3) Predict what one can expect to encounter when interacting with individuals of a different culture.

(4) Explain one of the most important things an individual can do to regulate their emotions when dealing with people from other cultures.

(5) Describe what a consensus based approach is in the decision making process.
