Chris C:

Q: How many different facial emotions have been identified, including non-basic ones?

A: There are no facial expressions of emotion that have been identified other than the 7 basic ones (anger, contempt, fear, disgust, happiness, sadness, surprise). There has been preliminary data on some expressions of pride, shame, embarrassment, love and compassion, but those expressions are not specific to the face.

Q: I would be interested in a recommended reading list so that I may improve my skills in reading people.

A: We can give you some useful resources. Please email us.

Q: Do you think that Mirror Neurons play and role in the identification of Facial Expressions?

A: Yes, mirror neurons play some kind of role but research has yet to indicate the type of role they play in the identification of facial expressions of emotion.

Marlon:

Q: Can a person use the knowledge of this science against another, keeping in mind that knows the reactions of the body, face or movements in order to confuse the other or would it be detected?

A: It is definitely possible that individuals could use this knowledge to harm others. Individuals can use this information both positively and negatively. Mainly it comes down to that individual’s values and goals. I believe that group leaders who motivate others are generally good at reading other people, which includes leaders of both benevolent and malevolent groups.

Q: I’m really interested on this so with the readings that you can refer and the training you put on the site how well would you say that someone can learn?

A: Research has shown that the training that we offer on this site is extremely effective in helping individuals learn how to read facial expressions of emotion at a high level of accuracy. Of course, as with any training, it is necessary to practice these skills in order to keep improving.

Tracy M:

Q: Do you know of any studies that have shown a method that is effective for people/children with autism?

A: At this point, there are no studies that have shown a method that is effective for people/children with autism. We hope that in the future we can do such a study. There have been some preliminary data, but not using standardized, validated tools.

EP:

Q: Is there any significance as to which side of the face a unilateral contempt expression occurs?

A: No, at this point, research does not show there is any significance as to which side of the face a unilateral contempt expression occurs.
