Humintell is happy to announce that the “Ask the Expert” series is back, with a fifth edition.

In the past we’ve posted several blogs with your (the viewer’s) questions to Humintell director Dr. Matsumoto and his answers.

Take a look at Part 1, Part 2, Part 3 and Part 4 by clicking on the appropriate links.

Ask your specific question(s) to Dr. Matsumoto in the comments section above. The questions can be related to anything: microexpressions, facial expressions of emotions in general, culture, emotion, nonverbal behavior, reading body language, recent research or detecting deception.

Please no inappropriate questions! Don’t forget we monitor all questions asked on the blog and inappropriate questions will be deleted.

We’ll select certain questions we think are interesting, interview Dr. Matsumoto and post the responses within two weeks.

  1. Why is there no Action Unit #3 in F.A.C.S.? And why does AU #42 mean? Big fan Dr. Matsumoto!

  2. Have you noticed any difference in an athletes pefromance when displaying fear non verbal communication displays such as macro face expressions vs more confident non verbal communication?

  3. Do you find any, inspiration or any theories and ideas, from Dale Carnegie’s book “How to win friends and influence people”?

  4. My sociology teacher and I have frequently debated on whether there are any innate parts of nonverbal communication and body language. She is a social constructionist and my belief is that some of it is innate but the vast majority is socialized. I was wondering could you shed some light on that debate?

  5. what is the best way to increase your non verbal awareness? or to say it another way, to increase your mastery in body language?

  6. Do psychopaths have ability to show universal emotions, as we know microexpressions to be? are they more likely to know when to mimic ‘right’ emotions and mask ‘wrong’ emotions. Are they easier to read in an interview or harder, utilising microexpression training? For both murderous tendency psychopath and corporate psychopath, cold, callous, no empathy.

  7. In your opinion what kind of jobs could you best use this material in aside from the obvious TSA and law enforcement fields?
